What is the Christian Perspective?
To be homosexual is as much a sin as it is to be heterosexual. That is to say, not at all. The sin for both homosexual and heterosexual people is in the actions that they take, not in their proclivities. To be clear, this means whether someone is born homosexual and whether it is natural is irrelevant. We are all created "very good," as stated in Genesis 1:31a, meaning we have no right to condemn our brothers and sisters. We are not only allowed to love someone of the same sex, but we are encouraged to. However, to make love to that person is a different matter entirely. All people are encouraged to abstinence and told only to marry if they find the path of abstinence too difficult. This may seem unfair to homosexuals, but research shows that most homosexuals are still attracted to the opposite gender to some degree. For those who are not, it is, unfortunately, a very difficult cross to bear. Yet, as a community, we are called to support and love those individuals. To lead them to the cross that Jesus bore for us. We do not guide them by looming over and condeming them, blocking the saving light of Christ because all they can see is our anger and yelling. We guide them by stepping aside with love and allowing them to see the brightness of Christ that supports us. People are brought to repentance via love and kindness, not condemnation. It is not our place to tell a person they are sinful. Those of us who deal with homosexuality are still encouraged to have deep and meaningful relationships with people of the same gender.
How do we Get this from Scripture?
"God saw all that he had made--and it was very good!" Genesis 1:31a
This verse highlights that we, as G-d's creation, are inherently very good. This does not speak to whether we are sinful, but rather the way G-d views us.
"A man shall not lie with another man as with a woman" Leviticus 18:22
This verse directly addresses the physical act, not the person or their feelings.
"A man shall cling to his wife and the two shall become one flesh" Genesis 2:24
This establishes God's design for marriage and intimate relationships.
"G-d turned them over to their depraved minds and they exchanged the truth of G-d for a lie" Romans 1:28
This shows the consequence of rejecting God's design for relationships.
"Now as a concession, not a command, I say this. I wish that all were as I myself am. But each has his own gift from God, one of one kind and one of another. To the unmarried and the widows I say that it is good for them to remain single, as I am. 9 But if they cannot exercise self-control, they should marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion." 1 Corinthians 7:6-8
This shows that all people are encourage to stay single and abstinent, and it is not just a call for those who are homosexual.
Scientific Understanding
There are only 5.5% of adults in the United States who are LGBTQ+. [1]
This is the middle ground between the 3.5% before LGBTQ+ became a pop culture phenomenon and the 7.6% polled in 2023.
The vast majority of homosexuals are some level of bisexual, rather than exclusively attracted to the same sex. [2]
This suggests that the number of people who are truly impacted by Biblical teachings on homosexuality is incredibly small, a whopping .15% of adults in the United States.
If homosexuality is 100% natural, then microevolution would have removed it from the gene pool as a homosexual couple can not pass on their genetics.
This suggests that homosexuals are able to marry the opposite sex and have children and are, at times, likely a result of their environment.
One of the arguments for homosexuality being natural is that it is found in nature. And it is a very rare phenomenon in other species, but there are some caveats.
The caveats are:
1. Most species that display this behavior do so due to lack of opposite-gender partners
2. Many species that display this behavior still mate with the opposite gender
3. Most cases in nature are actually displays of social heirarchy than attraction
4. Animals that mate for the sexual release are being controlled by hormones and instincts and are not making a conscious choice.
